Narrator: Stacy Gonzalez

Length: 8 hours 39 minutes

Publisher: Jason D. Morrow⎮2019

Genre: Post-Apocalyptic; Science Fiction

Series: The Starborn Redemption, Book 1

Release date: April 20, 2019

Synopsis: The Containment Zone is a 500-mile radius surrounded by mountains and closed in by gates. No one can leave, and anyone who tries will die. Within are lawless bandits, corrupt soldiers, and once-human greyskins that hunt down people to spread the virus. Some say the Containment Zone is where the greyskin virus originated. Others say the people inside are little more than lab rats being studied by the nefarious Screven government.

When 12-year-old Skylar and her father, Liam, are caught trying to escape, they are taken to Vulture Hill, a government prison camp no one has ever left alive. Inside the prison, Skylar learns that the facility is little more than a testing site for finding people of a certain bloodline – the Starborn. These are people with special powers that manifests in various spectacular ways, and Screven wants to exploit them.

Skylar has always known there was something special about her family. For years, her father has had the ability to completely numb pain with just a thought. Lacerated skin, broken bones, they can all be ignored with enough concentration. Learning that her father is a Starborn means Skylar is probably one too, placing them both in extreme danger.

Now, father and daughter must do the impossible and break out of a prison known for killing so many. But Liam has leverage the government may be willing to buy – the cure for the greyskin virus.

The first two books of The Starborn Redemption are set 40 years after The Starborn Ascension and 17 years before The Starborn Uprising. Each Series can be listened to independently.

This book was BETTER than expected. Don’t you love it when that happens? YES. Author Jason D. Morrow does an excellent job ushering you into the point of view of the main characters; Father and daughter tandem Liam and Skylar as they navigate prison Vulture’s Hill. I was impressed with narrator Stacy Gonzalez with her ability to breath life into the characters.

Interview with Narrator Stacy Gonzalez

What are the first things you do as you prepare to narrate a book?

Very first–read the book. A lot of people ask that question, and, yes, I read the book. After reading it, I try to think through the characters. I put either a person I know or a celebrity as sort of the touchstone for each character. Beyond that, I don’t really do too much. I like to jump into the narration once I’ve read the story and thought through the characters.

Does the author help you with voice creation, or is it up to the narrator?

I usually do it all myself, unless I have any specific questions. Or unless an author has something very specific in mind. However, in most cases, the narrator is left to create their own artistic take on the characters.

How do you keep the characters straight in your head as you read through the text?

I usually keep a little mp3 with a snippet of that character voice. Sometimes, there’s a word or phrase that I have to say to key me in to that character. There was a character in a book I did under my romance pseudonym where I had to pause the recording and say a really angry “F**K” to get in to that character. He was an angsty sort of neo-nazi.

Do you have a method for characterizing, or portraying each character?

Once I get the voice down, I just let the story guide me. My method is just to let the author’s words tell the story.

How do you feel about being a medium through which readers can access a story?

I just love doing this. As an avid listener myself, there is nothing better than the feeling of not being able to stop listening. I hope that I can give listeners that feeling. I love when I’m listening to a book while running or cleaning–both of which, for me, can be activities that are hard to keep on doing past a certain point–and I HAVE TO run or clean longer because I just cannot turn the book off.

What do you want readers to know about narrating audiobooks?

I hear a lot of non-listeners say that they like to hear the story how they hear it in their own heads. I would just want to say that listening to the book does not take away from that experience. You still use your imagination as a listener in a very similar way that you would as a straight-up reader. And listening can enhance the experience in different ways.

Review Concept

One of the best and most entertaining books I’ve ever read…er, listened to. First, the dynamic duo of Jonathan Maberry and Ray Porter is match made in heaven. Second, the characters are AWESOME. Ray Porter do an amazing job of bringing each one to life. Of course, the point of view character and overall cool dude, is Joe ledger. But there’s so much more. The entire Echo team as part of the DMS (Dept. of Military Sciences) is pretty unique. Top, Bunny, Jon Smith, Rudy. Then there’s the ever-mysterious Mr. Church. I love his underlying mystique behind in each book. It keeps you guessing and wondering…Exactly…Who is he? Even Joe Ledger is scratching his head wondering who he is.

I don’t know about you but I love a great antagonist, or group of them. Makes the story ten times better. One thing Maberry shines at is creating GREAT BAD GUYS. The plot for King of Plagues was amazing. Creepy, quirky, unique, and formidable. They’re all just great characters who believe in their motivations just as much as the good guys. Sebastian Gault, Toyz, the King of Fear, Raphael Santoro, Nicodemus, the goddess. Their plot for destruction was epic.

Ray Porter is exceptional narrator to the third power on steroids. He is the true voice of Joe Ledger. I couldn’t imagine another. Not to mention Church and Rudy. These are my favorite three character voices. However, they were a number of impressive accents in this one. Scottish, Irish, British, etc. They were not only great accents, but they actually sounded like different people!!! That is insanely difficult, but the good narrators know how to do it well.

1150: Provence

On the run from abuse, Estela wakes in a ditch with only her lute, her amazing voice, and a dagger hidden in her underskirt. Her talent finds a patron in Aliénor of Aquitaine and more than a music tutor in the queen’s finest troubadour and commander of the Guard, Dragonetz los Pros.

Weary of war, Dragonetz uses Jewish money and Moorish expertise to build that most modern of inventions, a papermill, arousing the wrath of the church. Their enemies gather, ready to light the political and religious powder keg of medieval Narbonne.

Set in the period following the Second Crusade, Jean Gill’s spellbinding romantic thrillers evoke medieval France with breathtaking accuracy. The characters soar and include amazing women like Eleanor of Aquitaine and Ermengarda of Narbonne, who shaped history in battles and in bedchambers.

“Historical fiction at its best.” (Karen Charlton, author of the Detective Lavender Mysteries)

The complex narrative of Song at Dawn is breathtaking. This, combined with the narration by Jake Urry make this a compelling read. I’m always in awe how Urry adds an eery, seductive quality to the characters. It brings the story into another dimension that’s hard to put into words. The sound quality and production of the audiobook was excellent. The background music added virtue and an authentic feel throughout the book.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE: 9/10

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Kudos to narrator Andrea Emmes who always does an excellent job embodying the scope of the story with all its characters. Believe me, the scope was pretty broad in this one!

  • Voice Creation/Switch Over:  9/10

The voices were spot on for the protagonists and antagonist. What helps make it more believable is the narrators ability to infuse emotion into their character. Andrea Emmes is very skilled in this area.

  • Pacing 9/10

Great pacing employed throughout the story. I’m sure this is a lot harder than it sounds. The story flowed well from beginning to end.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Excellent. The emotional quality of each main character is key, as well as emphasizing the quirks of each personality. No easy feat to accomplish!

  • Reader-Story Connection  8/10

Only the skill of the narrator kept in the story of this book. There’s a lot of different elements in the plot line that made it challenging for me.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher:   R. M. Mulder

Perfect.

  • Overall Performance: 9/10

The narration was a big reason why I choose this title. I can’t emphasize enough having a good narrator for an audiobook. If it were in any other format I wouldn’t have read this at all, but because of good narration I could appreciate the story.

Book Review - 3d rendered headline

This book is a very imaginative read on many levels.  Book two, The Curing Begins of the Condition trilogy makes for another entertaining book. Alec Birri does a great job of creating his characters with their own quirks and motivations. In each book there seems to layer upon layer of the plot revealed.

Narrator Jonathan Keeble’s performance is spot on in this book. He brings the story to life in many ways with her character portrayal, voices and skill. There were several notable accents that were perfect.

Interview with the Author

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?

I think a series works better than a stand-alone when it comes to the business side of things, as the first can be given away, but that’s not how Condition started out – when it became too big for one novel I split it into two and then, as the words mounted, three books. I’m 25k into my current work, and have no idea if the word count will end up being 40k or even 400k. I write the story and stop when it’s told.

What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Seek out danger. Nothing like a near-death experience for freeing the imagination! Seriously though, get out of your comfort zone. There’s a good reason why the likes of Frederick Forsyth have visited war zones or risked crossing deserts just as hostile. No money to do that? Then hang out with your local ambulance crews, paramedics, police and get the experience second-hand. Anything that brings you into contact with the uncomfortable.

Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?

Unless you’ve been praised for your ‘easy listening’ vocals, forget DIY – anything other than a smooth experience for the listener will spell disaster, no matter how good the writing. Be prepared to get your wallet/purse out – the dulcet tones of a professional actor are well worth the cost.

What’s next for you?

Alt Truths will be out later in the year. Another dystopian novel, but where ‘fake news’ has become so prevalent, democracy is on the brink of collapse (tell us something we don’t know, I hear you say). To combat this, every news agency and social media company is legally obliged to accept an independent ‘moderator’ – a United Nations policeman whose sole purpose is to counter the organisation’s output with opposing viewpoints. Not to get to the truth, but to ensure everyone has access to a different ‘opinion’. Needless to say, that doesn’t go down well, and when one of UNPOL’s officers discovers he’s being used to cover up a genocide…

Book Review

I loved the story idea and execution for this book.  Set in Ruritana, the upper class are full of jealously, suspicions, squabbles and conflict. The characters are very well developed adding depth and strength to the story. My favorites were Baron Rudolph and his loyal servant, Wilheim. They totally breathed life into the story!

Part of the beginning was a bit more narrative than I’d like, even a bit of an info-dump, but not too bad. In the overall scheme of things, very minute. Excellent book.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Narrated by: Jake Urry

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

I have no qualms here. When Jake Urry narrates he’s fully immersed in the story. His work always pays off. Excellent.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

I love Jake’s voice. When matched with books like, A Looming of Vultures, the result is sensational. This always boggles me. How narrators create the voices for characters and portray them so effortlessly. The voices for Baron Rudolph and Wilheim were extremely fascinating.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Excellence. Jake is one of my favorite narrators for a reason. The way that he narrates a story, switching between characters is masterful. The dialogue between the Baron and his servant Wilheim is memorable.

  • Pacing 10/10

Right on the money. Skillful, even particularly methodical for this type of story.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Masterful. Can’t say enough about how Urry brings out the personality of the main characters. It’s like listening to a book in 3D.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I was fully absorbed into the story. That’s the affect of great storytelling and narration.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher:  Richard Alan Storry

Completely professional. Very rich sound.

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

Absolutely masterful. This is the only second time I handed out a perfect performance. I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series!

Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?

Yes. I got my storylines straight from the 1900s newspapers. A 19-year-old white missionary woman was found dead and stuffed in the trunk in her Chinese American lover’s apartment in New York’s Chinatown. I moved the story to Los Angeles, but lots of things are the same, right down to tiny details. After you’ve listened to the audiobook, Google Elsie Sigel and Leon Ling. The B plot in the novel is about two singsong girls–Chinese sex slaves–who were stolen away from their “owner,” a tong president. It almost led to a gang war. The LAPD were hunting the singsong girls to give them back to their “owner” so the LAPD could collect a $1,000 reward and avert violence.

My Review

Great writing combined with a great narrator make for a wonderful series. The idea for this book was so intriguing, the characters, plot and unraveling of a mystery made for a excellent read. Very engaging throughout. The level of tension and dilemma were delectable. Narrator Andrea Emmes is such a pro, I picked this series largely because of her. if there were an all star team for Narrators she’d be on it.

Hats off to author Michelle Madow. She does a great job delving into the character personalities, their intrinsic worldview, and weaving together an excellent plot.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

ANDREA EMMES

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Stellar performance again by Andrea. When it comes to narrating a story there needs to be a transparent medium for the listener. They also need to enveloped within the story themselves in order to convey it properly. A+.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

This is purely a subjective matter as it should be for every listener. I love Andrea’s voice! They couldn’t have picked a better person for the role. Literally. Her enthusiastic, youthful, innocent, energetic voice was perfect.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

This is one of my favorites skills of the narrator, and I still don’t know how they’re able to pull it off so flawlessly. During this particular audiobook they’re several things to note.

  1. The male voice of Drew Carmichael- Enjoyed his matter-of-fact personality throughout the book.
  2. Lizzie – Of course was awesome. Deep sea diving into her subjective worldview was very entertaining.
  3. British accents of Lizzie, Andrew, Misty, Lady Givens and Brooks were not only believable but excellent.
  4. I learned something new through this performance that’s worthy of note. In addition to having a believable accent, or rather more importantly, you need to embody the character properly. Now I know why having an acting background is critical. It separates a typical narration to properly stepping into the character’s shoes to portray them in the story. I finally get it, it’s acting! Superb.
  5. Having to keep all the voices in your head, speak with clarity, and then switch back to the narrative voice is hardest job of the narrator in my opinion. Andrea did it with flying colors.

  • Pacing 10/10

Every listener has their preference for the pace of the story. Now with modern technology you change switch the speed of the narration at will. But I never do that. I enjoy listening at the normal pace of things. Andrea Emmes brings a lot of passion to her work, especially in emotions. It also shows up in the pacing of the story which compels you to pay attention more.

  • Emphasis 9/10

The emphasis was great. One of my pet peeves are monotone narrators without much deviance. I’d never pick up an audiobook with that kind of narrator. I wouldn’t last five minutes let alone several hours. But Andrea has great variation in her voice for each character. It definitely helps to bring them alive.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is how well the narrator brings me into the center of the story without becoming a distraction. This might even be a result of the aforementioned items. A summation of the skills of the narrator, if you will. A+.

Off the charts. Very professional job. I walk away with an impression of great characterization and the ability to bring a story to life.  Where the characters leap off the page and compel you to know them deeply. If the story has impacted the narrator, then through their skill, they in turn impact the reader.

My Review

This was a short but sweet one. Vengeance, book 1.5 of the Transcend Time Saga, is a nice development of the storyline. It takes place through Chelsea Givens point of view and how she reacts from the betrayal of her best friend Lizzie and ex-boyfriend Drew. It takes her back to her past through unusual means that will definitely affect her relationships in the present. Interesting too see what happens next in book 2, Timeless!

Narrator Mini Review

Andrea Emmes

This was a short one so I’ll be brief. Andrea Emmes again is brilliant embodying Chelsea Givens point of view and her new ally Shannon. See the complete narrator review here. But I’ll sum this one up in two words….

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Andrea Emmes

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Andrea is a very skilled narrator who sucked me right into the story from the moment I pressed play. Literally. That’s the result of a great narrator who are so enveloped in the story they pull you right in. Excellent.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Andrea’s switching back and forth from the narrative voice to each character in the story was flawless. Even the switching back and forth between male and female voices. Elizabeth (Lizzy), Drew,  Chelsea, Jeremy and all the minor characters were pretty entertaining.

  • Pacing 10/10

This is a strong point to note. Andrea narrates with such youthful energy, charisma and passion it’s impossible not to enjoy the story. The pacing was great. A bit faster than my preference but that made me pay more attention than usual.

  • Emphasis 9/10

Very skilled in emphasizing emotion, personality, critical parts of the story that you wouldn’t appreciate just by reading. Subtle nuances between each characters disposition were deepened because of it. You can’t ask for more from your narrator!

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I gave this a ten because I was completey sucked into the story right from the beginning. That’s how I KNOW the narrator has done their job well. I don’t see them, I see the story in all its glory. Excellent.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

High five Andrea, you nailed it!  I largely chose this series because of you. Rock on, sister.
