BOOK REVIEW

Turn to Dust Kay Hunter book 9 is a good mystery filled with intrigue and suspense. Right away, I was drawn into the story right from the beginning; where a gruesome discovery is made. A body is found in a field in the midst of a small town with horrific injuries, but there are no leads, or suspects to be had. Of course, this sets off Kay Hunter and her company of detectives to find the culprit responsible and why.

Being a resident of the U.S., the setting in the Detective Kay Hunter books play a prominent role. Narrator Alison Campbell does a marvelous job of transporting me to places I’ve personally never been to. Even though the crime takes place in the district of Kent, there were also Liverpool and Northrumbian accents that made the book very impressive. Of course, you wouldn’t get that experience if it weren’t an audiobook!

I’ve read every book in the series and they always deliver a solid mystery. Hats off to Detective Kay Hunter, Rachel Amphlett and Alison Campbell.

BOOK REVIEW

A solid follow up from book one, Upgrade has several fascinating story developments.  A mysterious Artificial Intelligence with unknown motives, intriguing technology, good characters, and a good dose of humor made this a entertaining book. The ending was a bit confusing, but I’m assuming that will be explained in next book, RESET.

Book Review

This book was quality historical fiction in my opinion. I found it extremely entertaining on many levels!  Anna Blanc is a very delightful, fiercely independent character. The Narrator was the perfect medium for this book. She fully brought the characters to life! Jennifer has created one of the most memorable characters that I can remember. Anna Blanc reminds me of the talented young sleuth, Flavia de Luce.

Loved all the interpersonal conflict, tension among the characters. Very well written. Jennifer Kincheloe is a good writer.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Moira Quirk

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

There’s no doubt in my mind that narrator Moira Quirk was fully immersed in the story. She was the perfect medium.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

When I heard that Moira was actually from England, I was even more impressed! Her american accent was remarkable. One of the most distinct voices I’ve heard so far. Excellent.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Perfect. I was astounded at the voice created for protagonist Anna Blanc; not to mention Joe Singer.

  1. Anna Blanc- Utterly mesmerizing. Her voice was very innocent and sweet just like a teenage girl. It made feel like I was transported to 1908 Los Angeles!
  2. Male voice for Joe Singer was pretty convincing. I could sense his frustration through the conflict with Anna the whole way.

  • Pacing 10/10

Pacing was right on the money. Not too fast, slow or lethargic. It kept me on pace with the storyline and engaged the whole way.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Loved it! Moira’s characterization of the characters is amazing. Anna Blanc and Joe Singer are stars of the show, no doubt.  She was able to bring out the nuances of each personality.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I was fully lost in the story as a result of great narration. What more could you ask for, right? Superb!

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Jennifer R Kincheloe, Ltd. Very professional quality.

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

Highly recommended if you like historical fiction, mysteries. Don’t miss this one. I don’t recall giving out full 10’s for any other audiobook performance. Congrats to Jennifer Kincheloe Publishing and Moira Quirk on a truly remarkable performance.

Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?

Yes. I got my storylines straight from the 1900s newspapers. A 19-year-old white missionary woman was found dead and stuffed in the trunk in her Chinese American lover’s apartment in New York’s Chinatown. I moved the story to Los Angeles, but lots of things are the same, right down to tiny details. After you’ve listened to the audiobook, Google Elsie Sigel and Leon Ling. The B plot in the novel is about two singsong girls–Chinese sex slaves–who were stolen away from their “owner,” a tong president. It almost led to a gang war. The LAPD were hunting the singsong girls to give them back to their “owner” so the LAPD could collect a $1,000 reward and avert violence.

Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?

I LOVE audiobooks. I listen to 20 audiobooks for every one paper book I read. The narrator is everything to me, which is why I’m so thrilled with Moira Quirk.

If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?

Definitely 1900s Los Angeles! I’d go everywhere that Anna would go–fancy hotels, cheap brothels, Joe Singer’s apartment.

I need to work on that celebration thing.

Book Review:

This is one of best mysteries of I’ve heard this year. With a full cast of great narrators, stellar plotting, and a suspenseful mystery, its easy to get five stars!  I’m not even sure how to describe the full experience of this book. Catch Me If you Can is an award winning book for a reason.

This cast of narrators was absolutely phenomenal. They each had well written characters who seemed to “leap off the pages” with their own motivations in the story. The production quality and sound effects played a very critical role throughout the book in my opinion. From the background music, sound of the storm, echoes from various spaces, footsteps, fights, you felt like you were in the theater! My only beef was in the very beginning. The sound of the storm wind overpowered the voice of the narrator and that made for a slow start. Very professional.

My Review

Great writing combined with a great narrator make for a wonderful series. The idea for this book was so intriguing, the characters, plot and unraveling of a mystery made for a excellent read. Very engaging throughout. The level of tension and dilemma were delectable. Narrator Andrea Emmes is such a pro, I picked this series largely because of her. if there were an all star team for Narrators she’d be on it.

Hats off to author Michelle Madow. She does a great job delving into the character personalities, their intrinsic worldview, and weaving together an excellent plot.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

ANDREA EMMES

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Stellar performance again by Andrea. When it comes to narrating a story there needs to be a transparent medium for the listener. They also need to enveloped within the story themselves in order to convey it properly. A+.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

This is purely a subjective matter as it should be for every listener. I love Andrea’s voice! They couldn’t have picked a better person for the role. Literally. Her enthusiastic, youthful, innocent, energetic voice was perfect.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

This is one of my favorites skills of the narrator, and I still don’t know how they’re able to pull it off so flawlessly. During this particular audiobook they’re several things to note.

  1. The male voice of Drew Carmichael- Enjoyed his matter-of-fact personality throughout the book.
  2. Lizzie – Of course was awesome. Deep sea diving into her subjective worldview was very entertaining.
  3. British accents of Lizzie, Andrew, Misty, Lady Givens and Brooks were not only believable but excellent.
  4. I learned something new through this performance that’s worthy of note. In addition to having a believable accent, or rather more importantly, you need to embody the character properly. Now I know why having an acting background is critical. It separates a typical narration to properly stepping into the character’s shoes to portray them in the story. I finally get it, it’s acting! Superb.
  5. Having to keep all the voices in your head, speak with clarity, and then switch back to the narrative voice is hardest job of the narrator in my opinion. Andrea did it with flying colors.

  • Pacing 10/10

Every listener has their preference for the pace of the story. Now with modern technology you change switch the speed of the narration at will. But I never do that. I enjoy listening at the normal pace of things. Andrea Emmes brings a lot of passion to her work, especially in emotions. It also shows up in the pacing of the story which compels you to pay attention more.

  • Emphasis 9/10

The emphasis was great. One of my pet peeves are monotone narrators without much deviance. I’d never pick up an audiobook with that kind of narrator. I wouldn’t last five minutes let alone several hours. But Andrea has great variation in her voice for each character. It definitely helps to bring them alive.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is how well the narrator brings me into the center of the story without becoming a distraction. This might even be a result of the aforementioned items. A summation of the skills of the narrator, if you will. A+.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing. Excellent.

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

Off the charts. Very professional job. I walk away with an impression of great characterization and the ability to bring a story to life.  Where the characters leap off the page and compel you to know them deeply. If the story has impacted the narrator, then through their skill, they in turn impact the reader.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Andrea Emmes

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Andrea is a very skilled narrator who sucked me right into the story from the moment I pressed play. Literally. That’s the result of a great narrator who are so enveloped in the story they pull you right in. Excellent.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Andrea’s switching back and forth from the narrative voice to each character in the story was flawless. Even the switching back and forth between male and female voices. Elizabeth (Lizzy), Drew,  Chelsea, Jeremy and all the minor characters were pretty entertaining.

  • Pacing 10/10

This is a strong point to note. Andrea narrates with such youthful energy, charisma and passion it’s impossible not to enjoy the story. The pacing was great. A bit faster than my preference but that made me pay more attention than usual.

  • Emphasis 9/10

Very skilled in emphasizing emotion, personality, critical parts of the story that you wouldn’t appreciate just by reading. Subtle nuances between each characters disposition were deepened because of it. You can’t ask for more from your narrator!

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I gave this a ten because I was completey sucked into the story right from the beginning. That’s how I KNOW the narrator has done their job well. I don’t see them, I see the story in all its glory. Excellent.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

High five Andrea, you nailed it!  I largely chose this series because of you. Rock on, sister.

Audio excerpt

Interview with Author Tal M. Klein

talklein

What was it like writing your first book?

Probably the third hardest thing I’ve ever done, behind parenthood, and having to fire someone.

Why hard science fiction?

I don’t have a good reason for that. I sort of fell into it. I’ve never gotten great grades in science, but always enjoyed hard science fiction books. I like to say, “I’m not a scientist, I’m just friends with a lot of them.” The genre sort of found me. Once it did, I did my best to stay true to it.

Science fiction

Who is Joel Byram?

He’s just this guy in the 22nd century, y’know. He’s a slacker king. He loves his wife, loves his life, and enjoys the status quo-ness of everything. Then his world falls apart and he’s forced to fight for everything he’s always taken for granted.

What does he truly care about?

After all is said and done, his wife’s love is the most important thing to Joel.

Describe a few things you learned while researching this book.

Oh man, I learned so much! Learning that the Mona Lisa has an older sister was incredible. A lot of the scientific innovations in the book just shocked me. I couldn’t believe we were already teleporting photons—isn’t crazy we’re already living in the age of teleportation? And the amazing stuff Oxitec is doing to solve mosquito-borne illnesses with CRISPR. We’re living in the future!

If you could teleport anywhere where would you go?

I’m on the road right now, so I’d probably teleport home. Sorry, I know it’s a lame answer, but I get homesick a lot.

Teleport with financial screens

Name a few things that helped you learn how to write.

I owe a lot to Blake Snyder’s Save The Cat and Robert McKee’s On Writing. These two methods have truly improved my writing exponentially. Most importantly: my wife! I owe the voice of every female character in my book to her.

What would you do if there were two of you?

We’d have to live in different countries. I’m pretty sure we’d be fighting all the time if forced to be in close proximity to each other.

Who are your favorite authors?

Larry Niven, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Scott Meyer, Robert Kroese.

What’s next for you?

The Punch Escrow sequel!

When she was five years old, his daughter Iris wrote a book called I’m a Bunch of Dinosaurs that went on to become one of the most successful children’s book projects on Kickstarter ―something that Tal explained to Iris by telling her, “your book made lots of kids happy.” Iris then asked Tal, “Daddy, why don’t you write a book that makes lots of grownups happy?” Tal mulled this over for a few years, and eventually wrote his first book, The Punch Escrow. It won the Inkshares Geek & Sundry Hard Science Fiction publishing contest, and is the first book published on the Geek & Sundry imprint.

My Review

This was one entertaining read for a debut book. Author Tal M. Klein is very bright, witty, with brilliant plotting and is an excellent source of technology. I laughed out loud several times while listening to this book.

The concept for this book is not only original, but fascinating. The ability craft it into a workable story, then deliver it on the page speaks to the skilled potential that lies behind the pen. Looking forward to the sequel.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Matthew Mercer

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 8/10

Narrator Matthew Mercer did a phenomenal job for his first audiobook! Amazing. He embodied the story perfectly and remained transparent throughout the book, which isn’t an easy job. It’ll be interesting to see what else he’ll accomplish down the road.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Some of the voices that Mercer was able to come up with were excellent, entertaining and impressive! I personally enjoyed the voice for the character Taraval. The switchback from narrative voice of Joel to other characters was superb. Hard to believe this was his first audiobook. The voices for artificial intelligence were also very notable.

  • Pacing 8/10

Pacing throughout the story was great. Clear and understandable.

  • Emphasis 8/10

This is also an area where great narrators are separated from the rest of the pack. The know where to place the right amount of emphasis, and gives place to creativity to enliven the story. There were flashes of brilliance that totally brought the characters alive, especially during conflict, and emotional tension.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is where I judge how well the narrator ushers me into the story based upon their performance. I say again, Mercer has the skill to do the job. I gave him a high rating because he embodied the characters so well, and remained a transparent medium through which the reader can connect to the story. Awesome. Hats off to Matthew Mercer.
