BOOK REVIEW

Turn to Dust Kay Hunter book 9 is a good mystery filled with intrigue and suspense. Right away, I was drawn into the story right from the beginning; where a gruesome discovery is made. A body is found in a field in the midst of a small town with horrific injuries, but there are no leads, or suspects to be had. Of course, this sets off Kay Hunter and her company of detectives to find the culprit responsible and why.

Being a resident of the U.S., the setting in the Detective Kay Hunter books play a prominent role. Narrator Alison Campbell does a marvelous job of transporting me to places I’ve personally never been to. Even though the crime takes place in the district of Kent, there were also Liverpool and Northrumbian accents that made the book very impressive. Of course, you wouldn’t get that experience if it weren’t an audiobook!

I’ve read every book in the series and they always deliver a solid mystery. Hats off to Detective Kay Hunter, Rachel Amphlett and Alison Campbell.

The Detective Kay Hunter series is one of my favorites of 2018. Kay Hunter is back on the job having to prove herself again merely a year after barely surviving an attack. I always feel like I”m part of the investigation when I read one of these books. This time it’s her boss, DI Devon Sharp who’s in trouble. Kay and her team take it upon themselves to solve a cold case linked to Sharp ten years ago involving someone close to him. The mystery unravels in splendor in this page-turning crime book. I’ll be eagerly awaiting book #6!

This series has become on of my favorites of the year in crime fiction. And for good reason–They’re awesome! Kay comes across an old adversary when she come across a traffic accident with links to a ruthless serial killer. Brewing at the same time is a mysterious drama related to Kay. Another great one!

Narrator Alison Campbell is a pleasure to listen to in every book. Very professional and skilled at conveying the emotions of the characters. She delivers an exceptional performance in every book. Way to Alison!

Rachel Amphlett’s Detective Kay Hunter series is simply brilliant. Whodunit, mystery, or crime fiction fans will be pleasantly surprised with her skill in plotting a crime with unique twists.  A very creative book to say the least.

Detective Kay Hunter and company must unravel a mysterious murder of a young teen at a party full of inebriated guests. An elitist church group, a strange pastor, bickering aristocrats, and young teens are involved in classic whodunit.

There’s also a running subplot since the beginning of book one that’ll keep you on your toes. Who is out to get Detective Kay Hunter? Someone is trying to sideline her every move and keep an eye on her. That makes things very interesting!

Allison Campbell is absolutely brilliant in every book of this series. She completely envelops herself full into the book, characters and plot, so it makes it easy to dive right into the story. Superb.

 

  • Voice Switch Over:  Brewer 10/10 Cassidy 10/10

This is what separates mediocre narrators from the great ones. Creativity in voice creation and the ability to switch between at will throughout the entire book. No easy feat for sure, but Allison nails it every time.

Some notable voices – Wealthy American couple. Male and Female. Aristocrat male and female voices with distinctive accents.

 

  • Pacing 10/10

Allison has a nice even pace that isn’t too slow or fast. This can be a critical element in a book if the narrator’s pace is off for some reason. I think it can make or break an audiobook in my opinion.

 

  • Emphasis 10/10

Great emphasis that successfully brings out the personality of the character and their feelings. Wonderful.

 

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is how well the narrator draws me into the story their narrative performance. If I’m lost in a story then it’s a plus!

I’m becoming an avid fan of Rachel Amphlett’s Detective Kay series. They all seem to play out like movies whenever I read them. Kay Hunter combined with sensational plots, horrific, yet fascinating crimes with a good dose of mystery make this series a winner.

I find Amphlett’s writing rather creative and refreshing in the midst of today’s crowded market, which is no easy feat believe me.

The first two books have wonderful beginning scenes that whet your appetite for the rest of the book. In Will to Live, a woman walking her dog discover a man laid across the railroad tracks unable to move and screaming for his life. Only a fence separates them, but the woman is elderly with a bad hip and unable to save him in time. Unfortunately the train is unable to stop in time killing the unknown man instantly with a sickening crunch. So Detective Kay hunter has to determine first who the man is and if it was a suicide or something more deliberate? And why? Great book!!

Rachel Amphlett has found the secret to create a thriller crime series. When I listened to this audiobook I got the sense that everything gels well together.  I’d say the author excels at portraying realistic crime scenes, fascinating plotting, with a unique killer. Which, in this crowded field is easier said than done.  A very solid book and balanced writing.

Narrator Alison Campbell has intriguing style of narration. Her accent is great with the ability to create various character voices.  Pacing is slower, yet lures you more into the story. Great job! I’m definitely looking forward continuing this series!

*How have authors like Michael Connelly, Lee Child,  and Robert Ludlum influenced you?

Enormously. When I set out to write the Detective Kay Hunter series, I read every interview I could find with Michael Connelly for instance. With a career spanning decades and nearly thirty books in his Harry Bosch world, he’s one of the writers I truly admire in this genre, along with Peter James, Ann Cleeves, Val McDermid, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. They all continue to write up to the minute and relevant stories and I’d like to think I could sustain a career with the same longevity.

Reading both Lee Child and Robert Ludlum’s books taught me how important doing your research and pacing in the story are – the two go hand-in-hand, because you musn’t bore the reader!

 

 

*What are the major writing difference between spy thrillers with Dan Taylor and crime fiction with Detective Kay Hunter?

The Dan Taylor series is more plot driven, although readers do love the characters, and the Kay Hunter series is more character driven. I think that’s because by the time I started to write the Kay Hunter books I was more confident as a writer and it shows.

 

*If you could compose a dream team of the top 5 spies who would you select?

Jason Bourne, Nikita, Leon, and Decker and Eva Delacourt from my English Spy Mysteries series!

 

 

*A dream team of the top 5 detectives?

That has to be Harry Bosch, Elvis Cole, Joe Pike, Alan Banks, and Vera.

 

*Is it harder to write a thriller or mystery?

I definitely find the spy series (both of them) harder to write, simply due to the amount of research that’s involved.

 

*Is Detective Kay Hunter based on a real personality?

No.

 

*What’s next for you?

I’m currently writing the sixth book in the Detective Kay Hunter series, and tapping away at the first in what will be a new crime series in my “spare” time.
