BOOK REVIEW

Turn to Dust Kay Hunter book 9 is a good mystery filled with intrigue and suspense. Right away, I was drawn into the story right from the beginning; where a gruesome discovery is made. A body is found in a field in the midst of a small town with horrific injuries, but there are no leads, or suspects to be had. Of course, this sets off Kay Hunter and her company of detectives to find the culprit responsible and why.

Being a resident of the U.S., the setting in the Detective Kay Hunter books play a prominent role. Narrator Alison Campbell does a marvelous job of transporting me to places I’ve personally never been to. Even though the crime takes place in the district of Kent, there were also Liverpool and Northrumbian accents that made the book very impressive. Of course, you wouldn’t get that experience if it weren’t an audiobook!

I’ve read every book in the series and they always deliver a solid mystery. Hats off to Detective Kay Hunter, Rachel Amphlett and Alison Campbell.

The crimes that Inspector Drake has to solve in this series are utterly complex and leaves me scratching my head every time. Crime writer Stephen Puleston weaves a tight plot in every book for the reader’s journey. I was secretly hoping that Drake’s marriage would be salvaged at some point, but to no avail. I could feel the deep seated tension between the two. Good book.

And I enjoy watching detective series on the television the recent Hinterland series based near Aberystwyth in Wales was great. One of my favourites is the French series Spiral but The Bridge and Broadchurch and the Rebus series with Ken Stott and Kenneth Branagh in Wallander are great too.

I was born in Anglesey an island off the north Wales coast and after leaving school in Holyhead I went to University in London before training as a solicitor/lawyer. I practised in a small family business doing criminal work in the magistrates and crown courts, divorce and family work.

Inspector Drake returns in Worse than Dead in book two of the series. Stephen Puleston pens another complex crime mystery that’s worthy of television series. You could say Inspector Drake is like the British version of the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. Both are excellent well rounded stories that’ll keep you head spinning until the very end.

Audiobook Review: Murder in Keswick by William Todd

While on a well-deserved holiday in the Lake District to get away from the toils and troubles of London, Holmes and Watson find no respite. As soon as they exit the train, they hear news of a grisly murder making its way around the murmuring commuters. A local aristocrat, Mr. Darcy, has been found missing his head!

And that very night, the wealthy widow finds a stranger in her home who, upon seeing her, abandons his plans and quickly leaves. She believes the intruder to be the murderer of her husband who is now after a large sum of cash she keeps in the house safe.

Unsure if the would-be thief is the murderer or an opportunistic burglar, Holmes devises a plan to catch the burglar, all the while investigating the murder of Mr. Darcy. Follow Holmes, Watson, and the local constable Mr. Wickham as they untangle the mystery surrounding a Murder in Keswick.

Review Assessment Auditing Evaluate Concept

The great Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson attempt a holiday and a bit of respite on a train to Keswick, but little do they know what awaits them. Holmes’ brain craves stimulation of every sort when not actively “solving crimes”. Well, he’s delighted what they stumble across in Keswick. This should please many fans of of Holmes.

Narrator Ben Werling does a great job portraying Watson and Holmes throughout the book. His pacing is a bit fast for my taste, but I thought it appropriate given the characters especially Holmes. Sound production was pretty decent with a nice touch of cinematic sound effects. Very entertaining!

The Detective Kay Hunter series is one of my favorites of 2018. Kay Hunter is back on the job having to prove herself again merely a year after barely surviving an attack. I always feel like I”m part of the investigation when I read one of these books. This time it’s her boss, DI Devon Sharp who’s in trouble. Kay and her team take it upon themselves to solve a cold case linked to Sharp ten years ago involving someone close to him. The mystery unravels in splendor in this page-turning crime book. I’ll be eagerly awaiting book #6!
