Narrator: Derek Shoales

Length: 10 hours 19 minutes

Publisher: Enigma Series LLC⎮2017

Genre: Science Fiction; Technothriller

Series: The Enigma Series, Book 2

Release date: Sep. 13, 2017

Synopsis: When a Brazilian industrialist hires the R-Group, the world’s most elite information-gathering unit to track the disappearance of his daughter – a dangerous – but quiet hunt begins. But just finding her doesn’t mean all will be well. The team in Switzerland follows the leads from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean, but the data trail is leading nowhere. Sometimes the most important clues come from unlikely sources.

By chance, two members of the elite team vacationing in Mexico cross paths with Carlos and Juan’s fly-by-night operation. Cloaking their “moving business” from satellite surveillance, their unique talent for relocating drug lords targeted by the Mexican authorities, along with their cash, gold, artwork and other assets, was legendary. These are Bad Boys, so-called entrepreneurs, whom even the most generous observer would question the legality of their business model.

Can the R-Group assemble the pieces of the puzzle without international consequences? Will the brothers stop running outside the law long enough to do the right thing? Can you hide from your past and still enjoy the present? Is the heiress hiding in plain sight or gone forever? And can the brothers rein in their contempt for societal rules and leave behind the sweet deals long enough to save a life?

The Enigma Rising continues the award-winning Breakfield and Burkey’s series, overcoming opportunistic cyber-crime in the high-stakes world of information brokering in the 21st century. With its strong cast of characters, this engaging techno-thriller of lost-and-found – and lost again – will take you on an incredible journey into the dark side of technology.

Book Review

Book #2 The Engima Rising was a better story than the first book. This was less of a sprawling plot with a clear aim, new characters and a better storyline.  Definitely had more of  a humorous tone which made me laugh out loud several times. A bit too heavy on the sexual activity though.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE:

  • Narrator-Story Connection:  8/10

Narrated Derek Shoales has done a great job preparing himself for this story and displaying it in his performance.

  • Voice Creation/Switch Over:  8/10

There were several voices and accents spread across the scope of the book. The Brazilian accents were hilarious. Some of the other accents weren’t too band but could use some help. Petra, Otto, Thiago, Rita, Laura/Simone. Some of them were too similar with one another. Robert’s voice was pretty and good—and one of the best was a British accent of someone I can’t remember, sorry.

  • Pacing 8/10

The pacing was appropriate in my opinion. A bit faster than most but I thought it was fitting given the characters from South America. I’d much rather have a faster narrator than a slower one.

  • Emphasis 7.5/10

I also love the narrators who can place emphasis where it needs to be.  One of my pet peeves is a monotone, dull narrator that drives me nuts. Shoales does a good enough job to grab your attention and bring you into the story.

  • Reader-Story Connection  8/10

Shoales grabs your attention enough to follow the story and invest in each character. His pacing and emphasis added to the depth of the characters.

  • Sound Quality: 9/10

Publisher:    Enigma Series LLC

  • Overall Performance: 7.75

Overall it was a good performance that brings you into the story. That is the bare minimum of any narrator in my opinion.

Review Concept

This book was so entertaining I spent a large amount of time smiling and grinning. Definitely worth an award. The characters were so lovable with their formal dialogue and personality quirks. Letty Burton is quite the lady trying to survive at a time where status and social status were so prominent. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in the  1800’s! The banter between her and the Viscount is highly amusing to say the least.

The narration was wonderful. Alex Lee made the story that much better with great character voices and accents. Too bad this isn’t a series!

Book Review - 3d rendered headline

Rachel Amphlett’s Detective Kay Hunter series is simply brilliant. Whodunit, mystery, or crime fiction fans will be pleasantly surprised with her skill in plotting a crime with unique twists.  A very creative book to say the least.

Detective Kay Hunter and company must unravel a mysterious murder of a young teen at a party full of inebriated guests. An elitist church group, a strange pastor, bickering aristocrats, and young teens are involved in classic whodunit.

There’s also a running subplot since the beginning of book one that’ll keep you on your toes. Who is out to get Detective Kay Hunter? Someone is trying to sideline her every move and keep an eye on her. That makes things very interesting!

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE: 10/10

 Alison Campbell

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Allison Campbell is absolutely brilliant in every book of this series. She completely envelops herself full into the book, characters and plot, so it makes it easy to dive right into the story. Superb.

  • Voice Switch Over:  Brewer 10/10 Cassidy 10/10

This is what separates mediocre narrators from the great ones. Creativity in voice creation and the ability to switch between at will throughout the entire book. No easy feat for sure, but Allison nails it every time.

Some notable voices – Wealthy American couple. Male and Female. Aristocrat male and female voices with distinctive accents.

  • Pacing 10/10

Allison has a nice even pace that isn’t too slow or fast. This can be a critical element in a book if the narrator’s pace is off for some reason. I think it can make or break an audiobook in my opinion.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Great emphasis that successfully brings out the personality of the character and their feelings. Wonderful.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is how well the narrator draws me into the story their narrative performance. If I’m lost in a story then it’s a plus!

Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher:  Saxon Publishing

Very professional. No problems here.

I’m becoming an avid fan of Rachel Amphlett’s Detective Kay series. They all seem to play out like movies whenever I read them. Kay Hunter combined with sensational plots, horrific, yet fascinating crimes with a good dose of mystery make this series a winner.

I find Amphlett’s writing rather creative and refreshing in the midst of today’s crowded market, which is no easy feat believe me.

The first two books have wonderful beginning scenes that whet your appetite for the rest of the book. In Will to Live, a woman walking her dog discover a man laid across the railroad tracks unable to move and screaming for his life. Only a fence separates them, but the woman is elderly with a bad hip and unable to save him in time. Unfortunately the train is unable to stop in time killing the unknown man instantly with a sickening crunch. So Detective Kay hunter has to determine first who the man is and if it was a suicide or something more deliberate? And why? Great book!!

Smiling Man

From the bestselling author of Sirens, Detective Aidan Waits returns – on the hunt to find the identity of The Smiling Man.

‘An arresting new talent’ Metro

‘I usually experienced the presence of a dead body as an absence, but in this case, it felt like a black hole opening up in front of me’

Disconnected from his history and careless of his future, Detective Aidan Waits has resigned himself to the night shift. An endless cycle of meaningless emergency calls and lonely dead ends. He is dead. And he is smiling.

The tags have been removed from the man’s clothes. His teeth filed down and replaced. Even his fingertips are not his own. Only a patch sewn into the inside of his trousers gives any indication as to who he was, and to the desperate last act of his life…

But even as Waits puts together the pieces of this stranger’s life, someone is sifting through the shards of his own.

When the mysterious fires, anonymous phone calls and outright threats escalate, he realises that a ghost from his own past haunts his every move.
And to discover the smiling man’s identity, he must finally confront his own.

Book Review

I loved the story idea and execution for this book.  Set in Ruritana, the upper class are full of jealously, suspicions, squabbles and conflict. The characters are very well developed adding depth and strength to the story. My favorites were Baron Rudolph and his loyal servant, Wilheim. They totally breathed life into the story!

Part of the beginning was a bit more narrative than I’d like, even a bit of an info-dump, but not too bad. In the overall scheme of things, very minute. Excellent book.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Narrated by: Jake Urry

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

I have no qualms here. When Jake Urry narrates he’s fully immersed in the story. His work always pays off. Excellent.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

I love Jake’s voice. When matched with books like, A Looming of Vultures, the result is sensational. This always boggles me. How narrators create the voices for characters and portray them so effortlessly. The voices for Baron Rudolph and Wilheim were extremely fascinating.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Excellence. Jake is one of my favorite narrators for a reason. The way that he narrates a story, switching between characters is masterful. The dialogue between the Baron and his servant Wilheim is memorable.

  • Pacing 10/10

Right on the money. Skillful, even particularly methodical for this type of story.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Masterful. Can’t say enough about how Urry brings out the personality of the main characters. It’s like listening to a book in 3D.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I was fully absorbed into the story. That’s the affect of great storytelling and narration.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher:  Richard Alan Storry

Completely professional. Very rich sound.

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

Absolutely masterful. This is the only second time I handed out a perfect performance. I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series!
