The Case of the Cursed Dodo is a family audio drama filled with funny entertaining characters. It played out like a cartoon with saturated with a  humorous tone. I honestly wish they would make more family audiobooks like this one. My kids enjoyed it!

Narrator Performances

Narrated by: Michael McConnohieJ.W. TerryDave Mallow,Molly BrandenburgAntoinette AttellIan WhitcombBarbara WatkinsBobb Lynes

I recognized a few familiar voices! Dave Mallow, J.W. Terry, and Antoinette Attell.

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 8/10

The main narrator had a great voice that anchors the story and kept me engaged.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

All the narrators had great voices for their characters, and I found them all profoundly entertaining. Definitely sounded like a cartoon! My kids enjoyed it too.

  • Pacing 7/10

The pacing was a bit too fast for me, especially with the all the sound effects. All of the sound effects, different narrators made it a bit busy and harder to focus.

  • Emphasis 8/10

Wonderful. The narrators were skilled at portraying their characters with creative, funny personalities.

  • Sound Quality: 8/10

Publisher:  Woolly Family Studios. A very professional audio production with great sound quality, sound effects, and direction.

  • Overall Performance: 7/10

This was a wildly entertaining audiobook that has much potential. It literally sounded like a professional cartoon! I thought they overdid it in some areas that detracted from the overall score. However, my kids and I still enjoyed it.

My Review

Great writing combined with a great narrator make for a wonderful series. The idea for this book was so intriguing, the characters, plot and unraveling of a mystery made for a excellent read. Very engaging throughout. The level of tension and dilemma were delectable. Narrator Andrea Emmes is such a pro, I picked this series largely because of her. if there were an all star team for Narrators she’d be on it.

Hats off to author Michelle Madow. She does a great job delving into the character personalities, their intrinsic worldview, and weaving together an excellent plot.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

ANDREA EMMES

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Stellar performance again by Andrea. When it comes to narrating a story there needs to be a transparent medium for the listener. They also need to enveloped within the story themselves in order to convey it properly. A+.

  • Voice Quality: 10/10

This is purely a subjective matter as it should be for every listener. I love Andrea’s voice! They couldn’t have picked a better person for the role. Literally. Her enthusiastic, youthful, innocent, energetic voice was perfect.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

This is one of my favorites skills of the narrator, and I still don’t know how they’re able to pull it off so flawlessly. During this particular audiobook they’re several things to note.

  1. The male voice of Drew Carmichael- Enjoyed his matter-of-fact personality throughout the book.
  2. Lizzie – Of course was awesome. Deep sea diving into her subjective worldview was very entertaining.
  3. British accents of Lizzie, Andrew, Misty, Lady Givens and Brooks were not only believable but excellent.
  4. I learned something new through this performance that’s worthy of note. In addition to having a believable accent, or rather more importantly, you need to embody the character properly. Now I know why having an acting background is critical. It separates a typical narration to properly stepping into the character’s shoes to portray them in the story. I finally get it, it’s acting! Superb.
  5. Having to keep all the voices in your head, speak with clarity, and then switch back to the narrative voice is hardest job of the narrator in my opinion. Andrea did it with flying colors.

  • Pacing 10/10

Every listener has their preference for the pace of the story. Now with modern technology you change switch the speed of the narration at will. But I never do that. I enjoy listening at the normal pace of things. Andrea Emmes brings a lot of passion to her work, especially in emotions. It also shows up in the pacing of the story which compels you to pay attention more.

  • Emphasis 9/10

The emphasis was great. One of my pet peeves are monotone narrators without much deviance. I’d never pick up an audiobook with that kind of narrator. I wouldn’t last five minutes let alone several hours. But Andrea has great variation in her voice for each character. It definitely helps to bring them alive.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is how well the narrator brings me into the center of the story without becoming a distraction. This might even be a result of the aforementioned items. A summation of the skills of the narrator, if you will. A+.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing. Excellent.

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

Off the charts. Very professional job. I walk away with an impression of great characterization and the ability to bring a story to life.  Where the characters leap off the page and compel you to know them deeply. If the story has impacted the narrator, then through their skill, they in turn impact the reader.

My Review

This was a short but sweet one. Vengeance, book 1.5 of the Transcend Time Saga, is a nice development of the storyline. It takes place through Chelsea Givens point of view and how she reacts from the betrayal of her best friend Lizzie and ex-boyfriend Drew. It takes her back to her past through unusual means that will definitely affect her relationships in the present. Interesting too see what happens next in book 2, Timeless!

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Andrea Emmes

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Andrea is a very skilled narrator who sucked me right into the story from the moment I pressed play. Literally. That’s the result of a great narrator who are so enveloped in the story they pull you right in. Excellent.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

Andrea’s switching back and forth from the narrative voice to each character in the story was flawless. Even the switching back and forth between male and female voices. Elizabeth (Lizzy), Drew,  Chelsea, Jeremy and all the minor characters were pretty entertaining.

  • Pacing 10/10

This is a strong point to note. Andrea narrates with such youthful energy, charisma and passion it’s impossible not to enjoy the story. The pacing was great. A bit faster than my preference but that made me pay more attention than usual.

  • Emphasis 9/10

Very skilled in emphasizing emotion, personality, critical parts of the story that you wouldn’t appreciate just by reading. Subtle nuances between each characters disposition were deepened because of it. You can’t ask for more from your narrator!

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

I gave this a ten because I was completey sucked into the story right from the beginning. That’s how I KNOW the narrator has done their job well. I don’t see them, I see the story in all its glory. Excellent.

  • Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Dreamscape Publishing

  • Overall Performance: 10/10

High five Andrea, you nailed it!  I largely chose this series because of you. Rock on, sister.

Audiobook Review: Seeing Red by Sandra Brown

Seeing Red

Seeing Red

BLURB

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Sandra Brown delivers her trademark nonstop suspense and supercharged sexual tension in this thriller about tainted heroism, cold fury, and vengeance without mercy.

Kerra Bailey is a television journalist on the rise, and she’s hot on the trail of a story guaranteed to skyrocket her career to even greater heights: an interview with the legendary Major Trapper. Twenty-five years ago, the Major emerged a hero from the bombing of the Pegasus Hotel in downtown Dallas when he was photographed leading a handful of survivors out of the collapsing building. The iconic picture transformed him into a beloved national icon, in constant demand for speeches and interviews–until he suddenly dropped out of the public eye, shunning all members of the media. However, Kerra is willing to use any means necessary to get to the Major–even if she has to wrangle an introduction from his estranged son, former ATF agent John Trapper.

Still seething over his break with both the ATF and his father, John Trapper wants no association with the hotel bombing or his hero father, and spurns the meddling reporters determined to drag them back into the limelight. Yet Kerra’s sheer audacity and tantalizing hints that there’s more to the story rouse Trapper’s interest despite himself. And when her interview of a lifetime goes catastrophically awry–with unknown assailants targeting not only the Major, but also Kerra–Trapper realizes he needs her under wraps if he’s going to track down the gunmen before they strike again . . . as well as discover, finally, who was responsible for the Pegasus bombing.

Kerra is wary of a man so charming one moment and dangerous the next, and she knows Trapper is withholding evidence collected during his ATF investigation into the bombing. But having no one else to trust and enemies lurking closer than they know, Kerra and Trapper join forces and risk their very lives to expose a sinuous network of lies and conspiracy running deep through Texas–and uncover who would want a national hero dead.

MY REVIEW

This was actually my first book by Sandra Brown and she didn’t disappoint! She unraveled this mystery with the skill of an experienced thriller master. I’m very impressed in every regard.

The characters leap off of the page, grab you by the collar and compel you to be invested in them. It’s that good. Former ATF agent John Trapper is quite an interesting character to say the least. The relationship between him and famed television journalist Kerra Bailey is potent throughout the book. If you love crime fiction, mystery, romantic suspense, then you’ll love this one. It’s sure to win some kind of award.

Sandra strings you along the plot line like a master fisherman and the patience of a master strategist. Once you’re hooked there’s no escape until the last page is consumed. The story is absolutely genius.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Victor Slezak

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Narrator Victor Slezak absolutely nails this performance. Dude was completely in the zone in this one. The best narrators let you see the story through them as a medium. Excellent work.

  • Voice Switch Over:  10/10

From Character to character, male or female, then back to the narrative voice was superb. The southern accent of John trapper, his father (the Major), Glenn the Sherriff, and Pastor Hank were memorable.  Slezak’s female voice of Kerra isn’t bad either.

  • Pacing 8/10

This one is hard to judge because is does match the southern drawl spoken by the characters. I think the ability to control the narrative flow or pace of the story speaks to the skill of the narrator.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Victor Slezak really steps into the shoes of each character and delivers every time. Most notably, one of the main characters, John Trapper was quite memorable.  One of the best performances I’ve seen of any character portrayal.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is where I judge how well the narrator draws you into the story based upon their skill. Excellent! Not everyone does this well, but Slezak knocks it out of the park. I kept coming back for more.

Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Hachette Audio. No problem here. Very professional.

Overall Performance: 10/10

I wouldn’t be surprised if this won an award. Hats off to Hachette Audio.

Audiobook Review: The Guilty Will Robie Book 4

The Guilty David B

The Guilty: Will Robie, Book 4

BOOK BLURB

Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi, after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not once. Not until the unimaginable occurs. His father, Dan Robie, has been arrested and charged with murder.

Father and son haven’t spoken or seen each other since the day Robie left town. In that time, Dan Robie – a local attorney and pillar of the community – has been elected town judge. Despite this, most of Cantrell is aligned against Dan. His guilt is assumed.

To make matters worse, Dan has refused to do anything to defend himself. When Robie tries to help, his father responds only with anger and defiance. Could Dan really be guilty?

With the equally formidable Jessica Reel at his side, Robie ignores his father’s wishes and begins his own desperate investigation into the case. But Robie is now a stranger to his hometown, an outsider, a man who has forsaken his past and his family. His attempts to save his father are met with distrust and skepticism…and violence.

Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father’s case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son. And this time there may be no escape for either of them.

BOOK REVIEW

Each book keeps getting better and better as the series goes on. I thought my favorite in the series was The Innocent. I was convinced it couldn’t better than this, then BAM, The Guilty comes along and shatters my expectations. Amazing. I’m continually amazed how David Baldacci has written this series. He excels at giving you the unexpected. Will Robie is forced to deal with his past demons with his father back in Cantrell, Mississippi. But when he goes back to his home town he finds that his father has been charged with a mysterious murder. Robie is stuck in a dilemna where he has to face his father, or fail at his job in the field. He must go back in order to go forward. Excellent read! Can’t wait for the November release of the End Game.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE: 10/10

Kyf Brewer

Orlagh Cassidy

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

The first three books of the series was narrated by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy, however in this one, Kyf Brewer steps in along with Cassidy to perform one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever heard. It’s that good! I associate Brewer’s voice with one of Baldacci’s newest creations, Amos Dekker.

Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy both bring you directly into the story through their narration. They both have rich skilled voices and don’t stick out in any way.

  • Voice Switch Over:  Brewer 10/10 Cassidy 9/10

Seeing how each narrator switches back and forth between characters with their own unique voices, genders and accents are one of my great pleasures in listening to audiobooks. This is one huge plus you get in audiobooks that you normally wouldn’t appreciate in reading them.

Kyf Brewer

  1. Some of the notable accents and characters that he produced were more than excellent. He has a very unique skillset.
  2. Will Robie of course, but his father Dan Robie has a rich southern Mississippi accent that was impeccable.
  3. Other major characters. Pete Clancy, Sheriff Mondoe.

Orlagh Cassidy

  1. Orlagh Cassidy has become my favorite female narrator. She has great skills as a narrator.
  2. When I listen to her switch between characters I truly believe it’s a different person speaking. That’s no easy feat to accomplish.
  3. She not only performed a Mississippi accent, but switched seamlessly between a variation of Mississippi accents. They all sounded like totally different people. Amazing.
  4. Significant characters. Jessica Reel. Black Cantrell prosecutor Tony Moses. Police deputy Taggard. The teenage Chism girls, Emma and Sarah. Sherman Clancy’s ex-wife.
  5. It was really hard to give Cassidy a 9 in this category because she really is brilliant. However, I noticed one area that stood out. It didn’t bother me necessarily, but I noted it mentally. Once Jessica Reel is introduced into the story, the switch between Reel and prosecutor Tony Moses got a bit murky. In other words, Tony Moses started to lose her accent and sounded very much like Jessica Reel. It was notable because in the first half of the book Tony Moses has such a rich accent and personality, it practically disappeared once Jessica Reel comes on the scene. I was expecting Moses but I got Reel instead.

  • Pacing 10/10

Both Brewer and Cassidy are great in the pacing department. The reason why I include this in my reviews is because some narrators are so slow I couldn’t put up with it for another 10, 12, 16 hours. I’d pull my hair out first.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Their emphasis is some of the best I’ve seen from any narrator. They really make the characters come alive. This is strength of both Brewer and Cassidy. Probably their greatest asset.

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

Perfect. Their drew me right into the story and wouldn’t’ let me go until the end. Kyf Brewer did a better job in this book than the Amos Dekker series in my opinion. I connected very well through them as the medium.

Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher: Hachette Audio. This production was absolutely entertaining. It has the subtle dramatic effects of gunfire, music and other effects that build up the suspense, conflict and tension.

Overall Performance: 10/10

One of the best audiobook performances I’ve ever heard!

Audiobook Review: Dark Territory the Secret History of Cyber War

Dark Territory

As cyber attacks dominate front-page news, as hackers join the list of global threats, and as top generals warn of a coming cyber war, few books are more timely and enlightening than Dark Territory: The Secret History of Cyber War by Slate columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Fred Kaplan.

Kaplan probes the inner corridors of the National Security Agency, the beyond-top-secret cyber units in the Pentagon, the “information warfare” squads of the military services, and the national security debates in the White House to tell this never-before-told story of the officers, policymakers, scientists, and spies who devised this new form of warfare and who have been planning – and, more often than people know, fighting – these wars for decades.

From the 1991 Gulf War to conflicts in Haiti, Serbia, Syria, the former Soviet republics, Iraq, and Iran, where cyber warfare played a significant role, Dark Territory chronicles, in fascinating detail, an unknown past that shines an unsettling light on our future.

Book Review

This was quite an interesting book. The Secret history of cyber war, behind the scenes with the NSA, military officials, and government bigwigs said a lot. The overall undertone I picked up from the author was that the government officials took somewhat of a passive role responding to the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure and realizing the threat of cyber warfare. Then again we did launch the first digital weapon against the Iranians with their nuclear devices. But that’s still different than protecting our countries computer networks, whether military or private sector, and still has proven to be a slippery topic.

They also talked about the difficulties measuring what would be an appropriate response to a cyber attack. Policies that would gauge what constitutes an act of war? Very challenging. Even coming to the new realization of a “cyber war” versus the traditional boots-on-the-ground war, has been slow. Not to mention detecting, tracking, pursuing a new type of enemy who’s virtually invisible and impossible to find.

Fascinating topic and a great book. Hats off to Fred Kaplan.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE:

 Malcolm Hillgartner

  • Narrator-Story Connection: 10/10

Hillgartner does an excellent job taking the reins in this one. It’s not easy narrating nonfiction, or making it interesting in a way that doesn’t lose listeners. Hillgartner is a win in this category.

  • Voice Switch Over: NA. There’s no purpose for voice switching in nonfiction.

  • Pacing 8/10

The pace was even, steady throughout the book, but a tad fast for my taste. The subject matter had a lot do with this. It’s packed with information about the history of Cyber operations, government response, and military jargon. I also forgot you can change the pace digitally through the audible app.

  • Emphasis 10/10

Considering the subject matter, Hillgartner is spot on for emphasis. This was a big reason I enjoyed the audiobook. For me to spend 9 hours listening to dense nonfiction there better be a good reason for it. Hillgartner, here, again fits the bill. Heck, he even makes it seem easy!

  • Reader-Story Connection 10/10

This is where I connect to the story, or in this case, subject matter, through the narrator. Hillgartner absolutely knocks this one out of the ballpark. I probably like the book even more because of him.

Sound Quality: 10/10

Publisher Blackstone Audio, Inc. They’re one of my favorite publishers on the planet because they produce quality work. Sound quality was premium.

Overall Performance: 10/10

The entire production deserves a 10 from me. I’m even considering relistening to the whole thing again.
