I’ve come to love the hilarious adventures of Viola Roberts and her sidekick Cheryl. Listening to this audiobook reminded me of the Golden Girls, or Laverne and Shirley from the old days of television. They feed off one another, complement each other. Narrator Yvette Keller plays the part perfectly. Her voice characterizations are on the money and color each personality just enough draw you into the story.

Narrator: Yvette Keller

Length: 4 hours 47 minutes

Publisher: Shéa MacLeod⎮2016

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Series: The Viola Roberts Cozy Mysteries, Book 1

Release date: Aug. 29, 2016

Synopsis: Sassy, snarky Viola Roberts quit her boring accountant job to pursue her dream of writing novels, even if it meant eating ramen noodles every day. Now that her career has taken off, she’s headed to a writers’ conference at an exotic Florida resort complete with white-sand beaches and swaying palm trees, where she plans to lounge in the shade drinking frosty beverages with little umbrellas. And, of course, no sojourn to tropical climes would be complete without her boozy, wise-cracking best friend, Cheryl.

When Viola discovers the diva of the author world dead (as a doornail) of unnatural causes, the police immediately consider Viola their prime suspect. But when the head detective turns a gimlet eye on Viola’s best friend, the author has had enough! Along with help from hunky fellow writer Lucas Salvatore, Viola is determined to ascertain who killed the corpse in the cabana before she or Cheryl winds up in jail. Or worse.

This is one of the best cozy mysteries I’ve read in recent memory. The ever curious, Sassy Viola Roberts and her wise-cracking friend Cheryl, are quite the pair. Together they make a big splash when Viola discovers the body of a bestselling, well-hated writer named Natasha. With lots of enemies in her wake naturally there’s a lot of suspects to weed out to discover the real killer. I typically don’t like stories that feature a writer as the protagonist such as Viola Roberts, but this was so well done I loved it.  Very entertaining and absolutely hilarious!

Narrator Yvette Keller does a phenomenal job of characterizing each character, especially bringing to life Viola’s point of view. Her and Cheryl sounded like completely different persons which is critical for listeners of audiobooks. That’s also a big reason why I enjoy listening to the audio version versus the ebook.

Book Review Word Cloud as a Concept

Great psychological suspense in this one! Peter J. Thompson does a great job with the point of view character Charley Fieldner. Raised to be a hitman by his father and eventually takes over the “business.” His life slow begins to unravel when he finds out that his own name is on the list! Great blurb and execution. Narrator Gary Tiedemann does an excellent job playing Charley and characterizations of other characters. Very entertaining read.

Great book and entertaining read. I laughed out loud several times! Hilarious.  The writing was good, but the narration adds a certain quality that otherwise would be missed. Narrator Gary Tiedemann plays it perfectly. His characterization was spot on. From clueless teens, mob bosses, eastern European crooks, and goofy goons–It all made for a very entertaining experience. I assure you I would’nt had the same experience without the audiobook. Excellent. Keep your eye on author Peter J. Thompson. Enjoyable characters, creative plots, juicy suspense and point of view. Definitely recommending.

I found this to be a very entertaining book. Most of the space fleet space opera books are great on worldbuilding but lack character development. This one has both. Ex-military Star force pilot Wyatt McCoy and Archaeologist Beth Parker were a good pair to follow. Good action, tension throughout the book. Narrator Jeffery Kafer does a great job as always bringing each character to life.

Great story concept and development of suspense! I like author Peter J. Thompson’s writing style.

Narrator Gary Tiedemann does a good job portraying the story. I laughed several times in this one. His narrative tone is very layed back–but ramps up the tension very suddenly at times. Great voice, characterization, and impact.

Length: 16 hours 21 minutes

Publisher: James L. Young Jr.⎮2018

Genre: Science Fiction; Space Opera

Series: Vergassy Chronicles, Book 1

Release date: Aug. 27, 2018

Synopsis: “[S]pace opera that plays out on a grand scale, and Young conduct[s] it with aplomb.”-Pop Cults, the website of Geek and Alternative Culture

For over seven hundred years, the Spartan Republic’s citizens have known one truth: Terra is coming. Descendants of exiles who dared to defy an emperor, the star nation’s 70 billion citizens spent the centuries training, arming…and waiting.

In 3035, Lt. Ian Campbell, Spartan Defense Forces (SDF), discovers a strange anomaly on his corvette’s sensors…and realizes the wait is over. The Spartans must convince the Terrans of the cost of subduing their nation. If they succeed, the Republic survives. If not, the SDF will be forced to paint the stars red with their enemies’ blood.

The Confederation of Man was born in the terror of the Harran Empire’s death throes. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, humanity now spreads from its cradle on Earth to hundreds of stars across the Milky Way, and seeks out new worlds to add.

Captain Marcy Cochran was hoping to find a habitable planet; she didn’t expect the system to already have hostile humans. Now a captive, Cochran must contend with a crew proving to be as dangerous as their enemies, and prevent what has started out as a misunderstanding from becoming a full-fledged interstellar war.  For Terran law is quite clear: All humanity will answer to the Confederation.  For the Spartans, that makes the government on Earth no different than the empire it supplanted…and they would rather die on their feet than subjugate themselves once more.

Aries’ Red Sky is the newest novel in James Young’s Vergassy Chronicles universe. A prequel to An Unproven Concept, it is the first in the Spartan Trilogy. If you like space opera with compelling characters, military sci-fi with high body counts, and capital ship battles on a galactic scale, pick up the the latest work in a series whose previous entry was recommended Amazing Stories, Pop Cults, and The Midwest Book Review.

The worldbuilding in this book was amazing. Weapons, military hierarchy and dynamics of character relationships were impressive. Had some trouble grasping the overall concept, or staying with the storyline though. There was so much information I think better use of the narrative could’ve been used to ground, or acclimate the reader into the book. Besides that, very creative and impressive.

Book Review

Book #2 The Engima Rising was a better story than the first book. This was less of a sprawling plot with a clear aim, new characters and a better storyline.  Definitely had more of  a humorous tone which made me laugh out loud several times. A bit too heavy on the sexual activity though.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE:

  • Narrator-Story Connection:  8/10

Narrated Derek Shoales has done a great job preparing himself for this story and displaying it in his performance.

  • Voice Creation/Switch Over:  8/10

There were several voices and accents spread across the scope of the book. The Brazilian accents were hilarious. Some of the other accents weren’t too band but could use some help. Petra, Otto, Thiago, Rita, Laura/Simone. Some of them were too similar with one another. Robert’s voice was pretty and good—and one of the best was a British accent of someone I can’t remember, sorry.

  • Pacing 8/10

The pacing was appropriate in my opinion. A bit faster than most but I thought it was fitting given the characters from South America. I’d much rather have a faster narrator than a slower one.

  • Emphasis 7.5/10

I also love the narrators who can place emphasis where it needs to be.  One of my pet peeves is a monotone, dull narrator that drives me nuts. Shoales does a good enough job to grab your attention and bring you into the story.

  • Reader-Story Connection  8/10

Shoales grabs your attention enough to follow the story and invest in each character. His pacing and emphasis added to the depth of the characters.

  • Sound Quality: 9/10

Publisher:    Enigma Series LLC

  • Overall Performance: 7.75

Overall it was a good performance that brings you into the story. That is the bare minimum of any narrator in my opinion.

Review

This book was quite interesting in its scope of computers, programming and cyber security. I understood some of the technical jargon, but definitely not all of it. However, it did fascinate me as I tried to wrap my head around the overall plot of the book. Jacob, young programmer and his relationship with a mysterious European encryptionist named Petra was one of the highlights. Jacob’s life is turned upside down when he’s caught in the middle of an international game of rogue hackers.

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE:

  • Narrator-Story Connection:  8/10

I give the narrator high marks here. He seems to completely embody the story in his performance.

  • Voice Creation/Switch Over:  7/10

There were a number of good voice creations in this one. Russian, English (southern), European. I think the voices of Otto, Petra, Andrew, and of course Jacob were my favs. Accents were good.

  • Pacing 6/10

I think this was one of the downfalls of the book overall. The tone seemed a bit slow for some reason; almost dull, which makes it hard on the listener.

  • Emphasis 6/10

This was another weak point in the performance. The Emphasis wasn’t poor, but lacked in a way that took away from the overall impact of the book.

  • Reader-Story Connection  7/10

Due to the pacing and emphasis issues I rated this a bit lower. It wasn’t terrible, but I did struggle overall.

  • Sound Quality: 9/10

Publisher:    Enigma Series LLC

  • Overall Performance: 7/10

I know that this narrator is skilled based upon the performance. I’d listen to Steven Jay Cohen again in other titles. The voice creation with the various accents, personalities were actually pretty good. I also think the something in the story structure made it more difficult but not impossible to enjoy. Overall The Enigma Rising is a fascinating beginning to the technothriller series. I’m curious to see where the following books will lead.

Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, and Harley riding has found ways into the nine books of The Enigma Series. Being the son of a military father allowed early exposure to various outposts, which has positively contributed to Charles contributions to many characters and the various character perspectives explored.

Relevant technology is combined with travel, romance, intrigue, mystery, and humor design for each book to be enjoyed alone or in sequence. Reviewers have positively compared Breakfield and Burkey to the works of Tom Clancy and Clive Custer which are some of their influencers.

They have also created some award winning short stories including one for The Enigma Chronicles focused on how one of the founding family was fractured due to the greed for information superiority.

Series: The Adventures of Zelda Richardson, Book 2

When a Dutch art dealer hides the stock from his gallery – rather than turn it over to his Nazi blackmailer – he pays with his life, leaving a treasure trove of modern masterpieces buried somewhere in Amsterdam, presumably lost forever. That is, until American art history student Zelda Richardson sticks her nose in.

After studying for a year in the Netherlands, Zelda scores an internship at the prestigious Amsterdam Museum, where she works on an exhibition of paintings and sculptures once stolen by the Nazis, lying unclaimed in Dutch museum depots almost seventy years later. When two women claim the same portrait of a young girl entitled Irises, Zelda is tasked with investigating the painting’s history and soon finds evidence that one of the two women must be lying about her past. Before she can figure out which one it is and why, Zelda learns about the Dutch art dealer’s concealed collection. And that Irises is the key to finding it all.

Her discoveries make her a target of someone willing to steal – and even kill – to find the missing paintings. As the list of suspects grows, Zelda realizes she has to track down the lost collection and unmask a killer if she wants to survive.

The Adventures of Zelda Richardson Teaser

The Lover’s Portrait art mystery is top notch and worthy of 5 stars. The mystery is highly cerebral, the characters entertaining, and the writing is well done. Very satisfying book. Narrator Carol Purdom does a skillful job of bringing Zelda Richardson fully to life. I though she was a perfect match for the protagonist. Carol’s voice is very sweet and potrayed Zelda as a innocent, determined, amateur sleuth who should’n’t be taken lightly. The book has great suspense and sufficient tension throughout the story which made it much better in my opinion.
